The market is sluggish today at the end of a short week following a bank holiday. This has taken the edge off the prices. Sow prices are stand on helped by the pound and euro moving in favour of exports.

Pig Farm Incomes Up
DEFRA report states:

Average farm business income is forecast to have increased over 140 percent on United Kingdom specialist pig farms last year, reports Defra.
This reflects higher prices seen during the course of the year for finished pigs, cull sows, weaners and store pigs and the lower prices for some key inputs, particularly feed.
The value of United Kingdom pig production increased 17 percent to £1 billion, the highest value seen since 1997.

July 2010

Comparison of the seventh month of 2009 with the same month in 2010.
July 2010 continue to show some important changes in comparison with the same month in 2009.
The Beef slaughter figures are interesting with a turn around in slaughterings; no wonder prices have been falling over the last few weeks. Steers up by 6% , heifers up by over 1.00% and young bulls up by an amazing 38.70%, giving a combined increase in total prime beef of nearly 10%. Sheep slaughterings in contrast are down by just over 1%.

Cow slaughterings into the food chain UP by nearly 21%
Sow slaughterings DOWN by nearly 30%.
Ewe slaughterings DOWN by nearly 7%

Prime Beef slaughterings DOWN 0.6%
Prime Pig slaughterings DOWN 3.39%.
Prime Lamb slaughterings DOWN 14.7%

The differences in slaughterings can be seen in the first 7 months of the year:

Beef UP by nearly 3%
Cows UP by over 12%
Pigs UP by less than 1%
Sows UP by over 2%
Lambs DOWN by over 12%
Ewes DOWN by nearly 18%

Weaner Market Comment:

AHDB prices for weaners for Great Britain at an average of 30kgs liveweight in £/head.(*provisional)
Week ending 4.9.10

Prices of 30kg weaners, ex farm, now quoted at £47.39; EP and circo virus vaccination are essential and normally this means that a premium above this base price will have to be paid.
Supplies of good weaners are very short.

SLAPMARKING !! - For Best Results be sure to use INK, not Paste

Pigs Producers – Please act now and for ever !

Please check regularly the cleanliness and condition of your slapmarking equipment:

• The Meat Hygiene Service (MHS) may use their powers to bin the pigs not correctly identified, as unsuitable for human consumption, at a total loss to the producer.

• If the problem becomes more widespread the EU will insist that all pigs are tagged.

The solution is in your hands –

SLAP PIGS PROPERLY!

It is your responsibility!

SQQ Prices quoted are in respect of New Season Lamb (NSL)
The 'Av. Deadweight' price, in pence per kilo, is the published average price of all lambs;
prices quoted relate to the average for week ending 28.8.10

(Source AHDB via EBLEX) N.B. Prices should be used solely for establishing trends as they include premium prices, such as organic, on the one hand and are not fully representative being from only 22% of the total lambs killed.

Friday 3 September
New Season lambs are short as predicted - drought in the East and poorer growth rates recently have compounded the problem. Of all the red meats lamb prices are holding up the best, although they dipped a little before picking up again slightly , they are nearly 15% higher on average this year in comparison to the previous year.
Slaughterings of lambs in the first 7 months of this year are down over 12%.

Friday 3 September -
All of a sudden there are no slaughter cattle to speak of being booked in - a real shortage helped by farmers attending to a now wet harvest following the prolonged dry period. After deadweight cattle prices particularly picked up a lot over the last 2 weeks they have stabilized before possibly going ahead again?

Please also go to Industry Information Downloads (PDF), for the new FCI delivery tickets to abattoirs as from the 1st January 2010. It is important that cattle and sheep are delivered with the NEW correct paperwork

For further information please ring or email, Malcolm Evans (07831 107903 - malcolm.evans@aqm.co.uk), Tim Leigh (07850 366404 - tim.leigh@aqm.co.uk) or Philip Robins (07917 603354 - philip.robins@aqm.co.uk)

IMPORTANT

ALL CATTLE MUST HAVE 2 TAGS WHEN BEING MOVED FROM FARM TO FARM OR FOR SLAUGHTER

• The regulations regarding Cattle Identification were updated on the 6th April 2007.

• Decisions regarding difficulties in identification at the slaughterhouse are now covered under the Food Hygiene Regulations operated by the Food Standards Agency.

• Cattle sent for slaughter without tags will usually be destroyed, at the discretion of the Official Veterinary Surgeon (OVS) at the Abattoir, with no payment and a possible penalty for the further disposal of the carcase.

When booking cattle please be certain to notify us of any over 30 month cattle as strict rules govern the transport and slaughter !!!!!
Please note :

• Not every abattoir can slaughter over 30 month old cattle
• Eligible abattoirs may only slaughter at specific times during the week
• Over 30 month old cattle must travel separately to others. If a beast of over 30 months is delivered with other stock to an abattoir it may be condemned or have its value reduced.

Please be sure to keep us informed exactly, regarding the age of cattle when you book.

BSE testing
On the afternoon of Wednesday 10th December 2008, the FSA agreed to support a move to increase from 30 months to 48 months the age at which cattle slaughtered for human consumption are BSE tested. The board based their decision on the advice received from SEAC (Spongiform Encephalopathy’s Advisory Committee) at its October meeting which stated that the increased risks to public health by raising the testing age was minimal. DEFRA also stated at the meeting that effective surveillance in line with scientific recommendations and statutory obligations would continue.

A summary of the changes :
• Under 30 months – No testing required, VC (Vertebral Column) does not need to be removed.
• 30m – 48m – No testing required, VC must be removed
• Over 48m – Testing required, VC must be removed
• Born Before 1 August 1996 – Animals must not enter food chain and must be disposed of as fallen stock
